Bride shocks by travelling to Penarth Pier wedding by train

Bethan turned heads when she arrived for her big day on a Transport for Wales (TfW) service – wearing her full wedding dress and bouquet.

The Welsh bride-to-be and her entire bridal party took the South Wales Metro to her ceremony at Penarth Pier Pavilion by travelling on the Coryton line from Birchgrove to Penarth.

Bethan even got to sit in the drivers seat – and was given a huge train ticket from the crew that said ‘congratulations Bethan and Chris’.

Bethan and her now-husband Chris are long‑time users of the line and when planning their wedding, the couple decided there was “no better way” to begin the celebrations than by incorporating the service they use so often into their big day.

Bethan said: “I know our guests were very surprised when they heard my plan, but TfW really made it special, so the bridal party had the best time and it got me to the ceremony right on time!

“Right from the start of our relationship, we’ve enjoyed using the Coryton line as a great way to quickly access Penarth, with its beautiful front and many great restaurants.”

Fellow passengers and Transport for Wales colleagues offered congratulations as the group made their way to Penarth on board a brand-new Class 756 train.

The happy couple say the decision was inspired by the significant improvements made across the network in recent years.

Bethan said: “Making the decision to use one of the lovely, new, electric trains to get to our wedding was one of the first we made.”

Marie Daly, Chief Operating Officer at Transport for Wales said: “We’re delighted that Bethan and Chris chose to make the South Wales Metro part of their wedding day.

“As regular users of the Coryton line, their journey is a reminder of how public transport connects people to the moments that matter.

“We’d like to congratulate them on their marriage and are pleased to have played a small part in their celebrations.”
