Police said the driver was trapped in their seat following the crash before finding they were ‘not even old enough to hold a licence’

A car was left badly damaged after crashing into a roundabout during a police chase. Gwent Police say they have arrested one person, who they say was “too young to even hold a licence”, following the incident in Newport.

The passengers fled the scene, but the driver was stuck in the driver’s seat, they said. Police say the individual has been released under investigation. Stay in the know by making sure you’re receiving our daily newsletter.

A statement from Gwent Police read: “A pursuit was authorised with this vehicle in Newport during a night shift.

“The vehicle travelled well in excess of the speed limit, ignored red traffic lights and repeatedly travelled the wrong side of the road.

“Travelling at those speeds was always going to end badly and inevitably the vehicle crashed into a roundabout.

“Thankfully all occupants were uninjured with the passengers running off.

“Unfortunately for the driver, as a result of the damage caused, they were stuck in the driver’s seat.

“The driver was arrested for a catalogue of offences, with checks confirming they were not even old enough to hold a licence.

“They have since been released under investigation for the following offences, pending forensic results regarding intoxication, dangerous driving, driving otherwise in accordance with a licence, no insurance, driving while unfit through drugs.”
