Doc Martin star Martin Clunes, who has recently featured in the new films Mother’s Pride and Wuthering Heights, will star as Huw Edwards in Power: The Downfall Of Huw Edwards.

Former BBC broadcaster Edwards has broken his silence this week ahead of the drama’s release and said it is “hardly likely to convey the reality of what happened”.

Edwards was handed a six-month prison sentence, suspended for two years and says the production company “made no attempt” to contact him about the truth.

In a statement, he said: “Wonderhood Studios made no attempt to check with me the truth of any aspect of their narrative before going ahead with the production.

“They belatedly asked for a response after the drama had been made, while reserving the right to edit any such response.

“They also refused to disclose whether any of those making allegations had been paid for their contributions.

“It is difficult to see how this approach can be considered remotely responsible or fair, or be in compliance with key sections of the Ofcom code on broadcast standards.

“Channel 5’s ‘factual drama’ is hardly likely to convey the reality of what happened.”

Why Martin Clunes initially felt sympathy for Huw Edwards

Clunes has said he initially had “sympathy” for Huw Edwards, as he thought he was being “outed in the newspapers”, before realising it was “a whole different ballgame”.

He said: “It was weird at the time because they wouldn’t name him, so lots of BBC presenters kept saying it wasn’t them, and it caught fire, and then it was a surprise when Huw Edwards was named.

“I remember we were doing the read-through for Out There at the London Welsh Club just as this story was breaking, and there was a photo portrait of Huw Edwards in the entrance, which a few of us commented on.

“You felt sympathy for him at first, because it just seemed like a person in the public eye was being outed in the newspapers, and I can say from personal experience that newspapers only want to be nasty about people in the public eye.

“But then they found messages on his telephone, and that was a whole different ball game.”
