The latest branch of Iceland Foods’ expanding The Food Warehouse chain opened this week in South Wales, creating 20 new jobs.
It’s the newest addition to the network of warehouse-style supermarkets, which offer customers the chance to stock up on discounted food and everyday essentials in larger pack sizes.
On opening day, May 19, the store gave away £1,500 worth of vouchers to the first 150 shoppers through the door, with 75 customers waiting in line before opening and some arriving as early as 4am.
Trudy Edwards, store manager at The Food Warehouse in Merthyr Tydfil, said: “We’re so pleased to welcome shoppers to our brand new The Food Warehouse store.
“Everyone was so excited for the grand opening – people started queuing from 4am.
“If you haven’t been down yet, make sure to check out our brand-new store and get your hands on some unmissable deals.”

Other opening day giveaways included seven Tower air fryers, one Daewoo double drawer air fryer, and five chances to win a 90-second trolley dash to fill a trolley for free.
The Food Warehouse was founded in 2014 and now operates 200 stores nationwide, offering great value without the need for a membership.
Each large-format store carries a mix of frozen, chilled, and fresh foods alongside branded groceries and homeware lines.
The brand is part of Iceland Foods, which operates more than 950 stores across the UK, including both Iceland and The Food Warehouse outlets.
Kristian Barrett, chief operating officer at Iceland Foods, said: “We’re thrilled to have opened our new Merthyr Tydfil store, ensuring even more local residents can get their hands on amazing deals, alongside a brilliant range of frozen, grocery and fresh foods.”

The Merthyr Tydfil branch is open from 8am to 9pm Mondays to Saturdays and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.
The Food Warehouse aims to combine the value of a wholesale retailer with the convenience of a traditional supermarket.
Iceland Foods has been recognised as the UK’s favourite online grocery service, earning the top spot in the Good Housekeeping Awards in both 2021 and 2022.
