{"id":158444,"date":"2026-05-19T15:40:33","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T15:40:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vale50plus.org\/clone\/where-is-the-stone-wall-in-barry-and-what-is-its-history\/"},"modified":"2026-05-19T15:40:33","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T15:40:33","slug":"where-is-the-stone-wall-in-barry-and-what-is-its-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vale50plus.org\/clone\/where-is-the-stone-wall-in-barry-and-what-is-its-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Where is the stone wall in Barry and what is its history?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"subscription-content\">\n<p>\n  The wall, associated with Barry House, is linked to Barry House illustrated on the 1877 Ordnance Survey map.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  It was constructed by the Barry family.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The timeline of its construction, however, is a matter of debate.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  By the 1935 Ordnance Survey, and with the realignment of St. Nicholas Road, it is possible the wall had been constructed by then and if not, many years before.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A trackway from one of two structures north of Barry House indicates the connection with the home.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  These two semi-detached buildings, seen as workforce housing affiliated with Barry House.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The wall is composed of Carboniferous Limestone, likely sourced from the Cold Knap quarries.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  This implies the wall was assembled at once using material from a single source, predating the previously mentioned mapping evidence.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The wall is generally about two metres high along most of its length, with occasional pillars topping it.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The top designs of these pillars are similar to those on some of the gate pillars of Romilly Avenue at the Old Village Road junction.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Beginning from the Old Village Road back lane, which served as the southern limit of the medieval Barry Green, the wall stretches south along St. Nicholas Road.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  It passes two gated exits before reaching the old entrance to the now-demolished Barry House, a site now occupied by Rowan Court.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The wall lowers on either side of this main entrance, but returns to two metres in height, continuing uninterrupted to the Westend Club.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The club was previously featured in a piece in December 2022.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Langford stated: &#8220;I&#8217;ve made a start, so if you can fill in the gaps, please email me.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.barryanddistrictnews.co.uk\/news\/26118130.stone-wall-barry-history\/?ref=rss\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The wall, associated with Barry House, is linked to Barry House illustrated on the 1877 Ordnance Survey map.
