Hunter Price International Limited is recalling the Crayola Discovery Craft Box due to an asbestos risk.

Shoppers are being warned to stop using this product immediately and keep it out of the reach of children.

Shoppers urged to return Crayola product sold in UK shops

The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has warned that the product presents a risk to health as the sand may be contaminated with a small quantity of asbestos.

Asbestos is a banned substance because it poses a risk to health even at low levels of exposure.

It has been warned that the product does not meet the requirements of the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011.

The Crayola product affected is model 35501 with the barcode 5061047355015.

It is a colourful box containing various craft items, sold by retailers including Argos, Asda, BargainMax, CJS Trade Limited, Sainsbury’s, Scottish Midland Co-Operative, The Works, and VapeSuperstore Limited.

Additional distributors and retailers may be added to this list, and further instructions provided, as recalls are launched.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards said: “Stop using the product immediately.

“If the sand is still in its packaging, place it in a heavy-duty plastic bag, double-tape it securely, label it clearly and store it in a secure location out of the reach of children.

“If the sand has been used, clean up sites where the product was used using wet cloths to avoid generating dust.

“Wear gloves and a mask. Double bag the sand, gloves, mask and cloths.”

It warned to keep children and other people away from areas where the sand has been used until the area has been cleaned.

Dispose of the product in your general household waste, or return to the store where specified by the retailer, who will provide a full refund.

For further information or questions, shoppers are urged to contact the retailer from whom the product was purchased.

What is a product recall?

If there is a problem with food or another product that means it should not be sold, then it might be ‘withdrawn’ (taken off the shelves) or ‘recalled’ (when customers are asked to return the product).

The FSA or OPSS issues Product Withdrawal Information Notices and Product Recall Information Notices to let consumers and local authorities know about problems associated with food.

In some cases, a ‘Food Alert for Action’ is issued, which provides local authorities with details of specific actions to be taken on behalf of consumers.
