Three Marks & Spencer products have been urgently pulled from shelves over fears they are contaminated with salmonella.

Health safety chiefs said the dangerous bacteria has been found in pistachio nuts used in the products, and told shoppers not to eat them.

The recall includes M&S Super Nutty Wholefood with a Soy & Ginger Dressing, sold in 200g packs with the product code 00797016. Use-by dates October 8, October 9 and October 10 are affected.

M&S Nutrient Dense Nutty Super Wholefood is also affected in its 285g packs, including use-by dates from October 8 up to and including October 11 with the product code 00961035.

The third M&S product is the Fresh Collection Pistachio Pesto, sold in 115g packs with the product code 29526743, with all use-by dates from October 8 up to and including October 13 affected.

Two products sold at Tesco were also named in the notice.

They are Pinch Pan Poppin’ Chicken Pasanda & Nutty Pilau Rice, in a 400g pack with the product code 5051873005819, and Pinch Bangin’ Butter Chicken & Nutty Pilau Rice, also in a 400g pack and with the product code 5051873005796.

Both have been recalled for all use-by dates up to and including October 10.

The recall notice was issued by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), which said: ‘If you have bought the above product, do not eat it.’

Shoppers can return the items to the supermarket they were purchased from, where a full refund will be available.  Receipts are not required.

Consuming salmonella bacteria usually causes symptoms such as a fever, diarrhoea and vomiting which clear within a few days.

The FSA advised: ‘If you are experiencing these symptoms, you should stay away from work, school or nursery until you have stopped having symptoms for at least 48 hours to avoid passing it on to others.’

In some cases, consuming the bacteria can be fatal.

Infants, pregnant women, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems are most at risk of complications.

A salmonella outbreak believed to be linked to imported eggs has gripped the UK in recent weeks.

The UK Health Security Agency this week confirmed 666 cases of the bacterial infection – up from 650 last week.

So far, two people have died and 106 people have been hospitalised.
