Cardiff Crown Court heard Lee Dickenson was riding an off-road bike in Barry on the night of March 15.
Shortly after 9pm, a woman was driving a Ford Kuga along St Mary’s Avenue when Dickenson failed to stop at a T-junction and crashed into her car.
An off-duty paramedic went to help Dickenson, but he got up and apologised, before adding: ‘I can’t stay. I can’t go back to jail’.
By the time police arrived at the scene, Dickenson was gone. However he had left his bag behind, in which the officers found a quantity of crack cocaine.
The defendant attended the emergency department at University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, where he was later arrested.
Officers seized £120 in cash from him, along with his phone, and he answered no comment in interview.
Dickenson pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply crack cocaine, as well as careless driving, and driving without a licence or insurance.
The court heard the 23-year-old, of no fixed abode, had four previous convictions.

“He understands the severity of his position,” said William Bebb, in mitigation.
Mr Bebb said the defendant has “demonstrated a degree of insight” into his offending.
He added that Dickenson had a prospective job open to him upon his release from prison.
Recorder Christian Jowett sentenced Dickenson to two years and four months imprisonment, of which he will serve up to half in custody.
He was also disqualified from driving for three years.
