Extreme heat disrupts Cardiff rail services to Penarth

by David Jones

Transport for Wales has announced multiple train cancellations and changes to services between Coryton and Penarth, with particular disruption between Heath Low Level and Penarth from yesterday, June 22 until 8pm on June 27.

Services are cancelled in both directions on this part of the route.

A limited shuttle train service will continue to operate between Coryton and Heath Low Level, calling at Whitchurch, Rhiwbina, Birchgrove, and Ty Glas in both directions.

Passengers travelling towards Cardiff Central or Rhymney are advised to change at Heath Low Level and walk to Heath High Level for connecting services.

The train operator said services between Cardiff Central and Penarth will be reduced during the period of disruption, and passengers should allow extra time and check for updated travel information before starting their journeys.

The disruption is due to the impact of high temperatures on railway infrastructure, which according to Network Rail can affect the rails, overhead power lines and the ground which the track sits on.

Passengers are being advised they can use Cardiff Bus routes 21, 23, 24, 25, 27, and 86 between Cardiff and Coryton, and the 92 service between Cardiff and Penarth, at no extra cost.

These services will be available between 5am and 8pm from June 22 to June 27.

Throughout the hot weather, Transport for Wales are urging passengers to check their journeys before travelling.
