GP warns Brits of runner’s itch and reveals how to avoid it

by martyn jones

‘Runner’s itch’ is something many people experience, especially when getting back into exercising.

The phenomenon causes runners to experience a prickling or intense itching sensation on their legs or stomach while running.

Doctor and marathon runner Miranda Layton says it is caused by your body releasing chemicals like histamine.

And while histamine is beneficial during exercise to increase blood flow to your muscles, a side effect to releasing this chemical can be itchiness.

Miranda explained that runner’s itch most commonly affects people if they’ve just started to get back into running again after taking some time off.

How to avoid runner’s itch

To avoid runner’s itch and help reduce the side effects, Miranda advised following several easy tips:

  • Keep your skin well moisturised and your body hydrated
  • Warm up before a run
  • Wear breathable fabrics while you exercise

She added: “When you start running, your body releases chemicals like histamine that help to get more blood flowing to our working muscles.

“Histamine has that side effect, causing that itchy feeling.

“So, what can you do about it? Make sure your skin is well moisturised, you’re well hydrated and warm up properly before your run.”

Miranda says symptoms usually disappear when your body gets used to exercising again, so it can be helpful to develop a consistent running routine.

When to stop running and seek medical advice

The GP warned runners to “stop running immediately” and seek medical help if they notice any of the following symptoms on top of those experienced with runner’s itch:

  • Rashes
  • Chest tightness
  • Dizziness

Miranda said this is because it could point to exercise-induced anaphylaxis, which is a serious and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that happens during or after physical activity.
