Griffin Books, located on Windsor Road, was announced as the Welsh winner as part of the prestigious annual awards celebrating the best bookshops across the UK and Ireland.

The award recognises independent bookshops that play an important role in their communities while delivering innovative bookselling and creative events for readers.

This latest honour marks the fourth time in six years the Penarth shop has taken the Welsh title.

Owner Mel Griffin said the team were thrilled by the recognition.

She said: “Being selected once again as Wales’ Indie Bookshop of the Year means the world to me.

“It’s been a huge year for Griffin Books, what with expanding into the next-door unit and creating a dedicated children’s and teens’ department, along with our usual wide-ranging programme of author events, in-store activities and schools support.

“I couldn’t be prouder of my wonderful team and all that we’ve achieved together. We also owe a big thank you to our loyal customers as well as the publishers and neighbouring businesses we partner with.”

The shop recently expanded into a second unit next door, allowing staff to create a new space dedicated to children and teenagers while freeing up additional room in the main store for adult titles and other items.

Alongside its retail offering, the shop hosts regular author events, reading initiatives, and school partnerships, helping to build a strong community around books and reading in Penarth.

The British Book Awards judges selected regional and country winners from 76 finalists, recognising shops that continue to attract readers and support local creative industries.

The winners now go forward in the competition for the overall Independent Bookshop of the Year title, which will be announced later this year.

Griffin Books has become a well-known destination for book lovers in Penarth, with the latest award highlighting its continued success and growing presence in the local community.
