Hands-on geology day coming to Penarth beach in August

by David Jones

The event, run by the South Wales Geologists’ Association, will take place on Saturday, August 15, and is open to people of all ages and experience levels.

Visitors are invited to drop in at any time between 1pm and 4pm to explore the area, look for fossils, and learn about the geology of the coastline.

Families are encouraged to get involved, with opportunities to take home some of their finds.

The association will provide an identification guide and bring along examples of different rocks and fossils for people to handle.

No experience, or hammers, necessary, but organisers remind attendees to wear sensible footwear and dress as appropriate for the weather.

The South Wales Geologists’ Association say that they have moved their “normal monthly fieldtrip” to Penarth as this is “such a great beach for finding fossils and rocks” that will allow them to “spend some time helping the public with interpreting this wonderful part of our heritage.”

They don’t encourage the public to hammer the rocks, just train them to use their eyes to see what’s in the loose rocks along the beach, and help interpret their surroundings.
