As we move towards the warmer months, the chances of spotting rats and mice near your home increase significantly. Spring represents a peak breeding season for these rodents, during which they’re searching for food, shelter and reproducing rapidly – making our homes perfect nesting spots.
Neglecting to prepare for this scenario and missing early warning signs can quickly lead to a full-blown rat infestation across your property. Apart from the potentially expensive extermination costs, there’s also the risk of disease transmission. Thankfully, there may be a simple and economical method to keep them at bay.
Glen Peskett, DIY specialist from Saxton Blades, reveals that one everyday kitchen ingredient can repel rats from your property year-round – garlic.
He said: “Garlic is a favourite all around the world, it smells amazing, has health benefits and transforms any dish you put it in. But for rats? That strong, pungent smell is their absolute nightmare.
“Rats rely heavily on their sense of smell to navigate and find food. Garlic, with its strong sulphur compounds, overwhelms their sense of smell and makes them feel disoriented.
“These compounds are also something rats associate with toxic substances, naturally deterring them from entering your home.”

How to use garlic to keep rats and mice away
Position garlic cloves near entry points around your property where rodents are most likely to enter.
They’re typically attracted to spaces like basements, garages, kitchens and lofts, so ensure you place them close to any gaps and doorways on the outside of your home.
Garlic oil, cayenne pepper and apple cider vinegar can also work well in keeping unwanted pests at bay.
That said, repellents on their own won’t solve the problem entirely.
Addressing other issues, such as minimising clutter, can eliminate potential hiding places that rats might use for nesting.
Food waste is another major attraction for rats, so ensure your bins are securely closed, emptied regularly, and clean up any spills straight away.
Lastly, check your property thoroughly for any openings, especially under doors or around vents, and block them up – even the smallest of gaps can give rats and mice sufficient space to get through.
