A British mum and YouTuber has revealed what she was able to buy from ASDA’s Essentials range for just £10 – and the budget shopping haul impressed her during the cost of living crisis
A YouTuber has disclosed how much she managed to purchase from ASDA for merely £10. The cost of living crisis remains one of the pressing topics currently, as worries intensify about potential further increases.
This is partly attributable to the rising cost of oil following the commencement of the Iran war, which has exacerbated problems caused by other significant events in recent years, including the Ukraine War and the Covid-19 pandemic.
Publishing under the username @GreenHouseatFiveSix in a YouTube short, the British mother showed that she managed to obtain yoghurt, juice, cheese, garlic bread, sausage rolls, cooked meats, curry sauce, pasta, spaghetti, soup, two packets of rice, sweetcorn, porridge, jam, tinned rice pudding, tinned peaches and spaghetti loops for just beneath budget at £9.97.
In the footage, she stated: “Let’s head to ASDA and see how much £10 gets us in the ASDA Essentials range. First thing I got for the kids was some of these fromage frais for 89p.
“I got some tropical juice drink for 92p, some mozzarella for 69p, some garlic bread baguette for 36p, that’s an absolute bargain, some sausage rolls for 99p, some of this pork luncheon meat for a pound.
“Got a mild curry sauce for 49p, some spaghetti for 28p, and some penne for 41p. I then got some chicken soup for 55p, some of these golden vegetable savoury rice, I got two of them for 28p [each].
“I got some sweet corn for 50p, some jam for 49p, some rice pudding for 35p, some peach slices for 45p, and I had a little bit left so I got some spaghetti loops for 19p and the total was £9.97. Look at all this food we got for less than a tenner. I am crazy impressed with the prices. Let’s hope the quality is decent enough.”
The YouTuber’s post detailing how much they were able to purchase at one of the UK’s most beloved supermarkets arrives as mounting pressure builds on the Labour government to alleviate the financial strain on Britons as the cost of living crisis continues to worsen.
Yet it isn’t solely the government addressing the issue, with consumer group Which? scrutinising prices across each supermarket to establish which offers the best value in the UK.
Following extensive research, they determined that ALDI, rather than Lidl or ASDA, was the most affordable supermarket in the UK in May. This conclusion was reached after compiling a basket of 95 items and comparing prices across the supermarkets.
The shopping list totalled £168.30 at ALDI, compared with £170.66 at Lidl, which placed third behind Lidl Plus prices. ASDA came in fourth position, with the same basket costing £192.58.
Responding to the findings, Which?’s Retail Editor Reena Sewraz said: “Many people are still struggling to keep up with the cost of living and while juggling loyalty apps or chasing short-term promotions can sometimes pay off, shoppers just want reliably low prices with no strings attached.
“Our research shows that Aldi and Lidl completely dominate when it comes to everyday value, so it’s no surprise that they are thriving as people permanently change how they shop.
“When choosing the wrong supermarket can mean paying up to 40% more for comparable essentials, you can make massive savings just by switching where you do your weekly shop.”
