One major change for the summer season has already come with the departure of Boofy’s under the Western Shelter, and the opening of Farnhams in its place.
An already established business, Farnhams owns and operates three other shops in the Vale in Cowbridge, Fontygary and Boverton, with this new addition on the seafront only adding to their infamy.
It only felt right that we made the journey down to Barry Island to give it a go.
In hindsight, travelling to the Island on what would be the hottest day of the year so far may not have been the smartest idea, but it certainly added to the atmosphere. I joined what seemed like a long queue and within 20 minutes I was presented with my order – a quick turnaround for a day like this, thanks to the efficient staff behind the counter.
There’s no better place than to enjoy a tray of chips than on the wall directly in front of Farnhams, so I made my way over and swung my legs over the wall to take in the brilliant views over Whitmore Bay.
Upon opening the container, I was greeted by what I can only describe as ‘whale and chips’. The portions on the fish and chips were absolutely huge, with the fillet of fish taking up most of the container.
Everything was piping hot and doused in salt and vinegar (the best way to enjoy some seafront chips). A lack of grease made everything that much more enjoyable, with the fish flaking apart every time I dug my wooden fork into the container.
I can confidently say that even if I had ventured down on a cold and windy day to try this new offering, that I would have still enjoyed it the same amount, just tucked away in the warmth of the takeaway instead of basking in the sun. The food alone made the trip worth it.
There is a reason why Farnhams is award winning and this meal is testament to that. Everything was fresh, piping hot and flavourful – what more could you ask for from a seafront chippy?
