I used to shop only at Lidl until I discovered a really simple way to get better value for my money at Marks and Spencer.
There’s nothing more frustrating than approaching month-end with depleted funds, which explains why I previously shopped exclusively at Lidl, given they typically offer the most competitive pricing amongst supermarkets. I’m passionate about budgeting and seeking out bargains, but with the warmer weather arriving, I’ve found myself drawn to the picnic selections at Marks & Spencer.
I previously steered clear of Marks and Spencer shopping entirely due to its reputation for steep pricing, wanting to avoid any nasty surprises at the checkout. Yet, with temperatures now warm enough for evening outdoor dining, I’ve started occasionally visiting M&S for light bites for my supper, and it’s shown me I can genuinely make savings by shopping there.
From my experience, M&S’s priciest products are indulgent items such as chocolate, but when purchasing fresh produce like fruit, it proves more economical in the long term to shop there.
I’m particularly fond of strawberries, and during this season, I consume them nearly every day for breakfast or as an after-work treat, as I enjoy eating them whilst sitting outdoors in the sunshine.
Nevertheless, I’ve recently realised I was spending virtually identical amounts on strawberry packs at Lidl and M&S, whilst receiving superior value at the supposedly pricier retailer.
Strawberries from M&S are generally higher quality in my view, which is why I favour purchasing them there as they typically remain fresh considerably longer when refrigerated.
I typically spend £2.60 for a pack of strawberries at Marks and Spencer, though occasionally I’ll purchase a larger pack at £4.25 if I’m preparing picnic meals outdoors, or I can get them even cheaper at £1.48 when I find a yellow sticker bargain, reports the Express.
I choose to buy M&S strawberries as they remain fresh for up to a week without going off. I recently purchased yellow-sticker strawberries, and they’re still in good condition four days later.
By contrast, I generally spend around £2.99 on strawberries at Lidl, which can work out more costly depending on which size I purchase at M&S, and they typically only last a few days at best.
Lidl strawberries are acceptable, but they deteriorate and go mouldy far more quickly in my experience, which means I’m not using them up and having to waste additional money purchasing more fruit.
I find myself having to discard more when I buy fruit at Lidl, but if I purchase my strawberries at M&S, I reduce my food waste and save money, as I don’t have to replace anything.
I still appreciate Lidl, and will always visit them for my weekly food shop for basic items, as they usually have plenty of excellent deals on everyday essentials.
Nevertheless, if I want my food to remain fresh for longer and not feel guilty about having to discard food, then I strongly recommend purchasing fruit and vegetables from M&S if you’re able to.
