The data gives a UK-wide snapshot of food hygiene standards, revealing long-term improvements across the sector and highlighting key regional differences.

The Vale of Glamorgan ranks among the better-performing areas, with just 1.6 per cent of premises rated two or below and an average score of 4.59.

This places it 13th out of 22 Welsh councils.

Richard Barton, a commercial catering engineer at Cairn Catering Engineers, said: “People assume a low rating means dirty food.

“It almost never does.

“Two of the three things an inspector scores are the kitchen’s condition and its records.”

Bridgend fares slightly better, with 1.5 per cent of premises rated two or below and an average rating of 4.62.

The highest-rated councils in Wales include Wrexham (4.94), Gwynedd (4.84), and Anglesey (4.84).

Blaenau Gwent (4.19) is the lowest.

Across the UK, the majority of premises score highly, with more than 78 per cent holding a “very good” rating of five.

Just one in 33 premises is rated two or below nationwide.
