Jackknifed lorry blocks road in both directions

A jackknifed lorry blocked the A470 while the A483 was also shut in a day of chaos on two key routes through Wales

A jackknifed lorry obstructed a major road in Wales, closing it in both direction throughout Wednesday, March 4. The A470 near Rhayader in Powys was closed just before 8am on Wednesday morning whilst the A483 was also closed, resulting in a day of disruption on two major Welsh routes.

A HGV lost control on the route and ended up sprawled across both lanes. Shortly after 9am a second incident took place on the A483 between Newtown and Dolfor. The road was also shut for several hours, reports North Wales Live.

A spokesperson for Dyfed-Powys Police said: “Officers are at the scene of a single-vehicle road traffic collision on the A483 between Newtown and Dolfor. The call was made to police just before 9am this morning.

“A telephone pole was damaged during the collision, and BT have been informed. The road remains closed while emergency services attend the scene. No injuries have been reported.” For the biggest stories in Wales first sign up to our daily newsletter here

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service stated that the service was called at 9.07am to a collision involving a light goods vehicle on Dolfor Road near Newtown.

A team from Newtown Fire Station responded to the incident, which involved an LGV that had collided with a telegraph pole.

It’s believed that no one was seriously hurt, but the road remained shut for the clean-up operation. It was eventually completely cleared by 2pm.

This meant that two crucial routes connecting north and south Wales were blocked. There were reports that a third, more rural road near Llanidloes was also closed after an HGV became stuck whilst seeking an alternative route.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service reported that they were called at 7.44am this morning following reports of an overturned heavy goods vehicle on the A470 near Rhayader.

Teams from Rhayader and Llandrindod Wells attended the scene. One individual had already exited the vehicle upon their arrival, and firefighters handed the patient over to the ambulance service.

Dyfed-Powys Police received a report of an overturned lorry on the A470 between Rhayader and Llangurig at around 7.45am on Wednesday morning.
