Ten youngtsers from Jenner Park Primary School’s diversity group, accompanied by Miss Hewett, Mr Morris, and Miss Shaw, jetted off to Istanbul after securing funding from Taith.
The trip saw children from Nigeria, Afghanistan, India, Wales, Sri Lanka, and Jamaica, come together for a week to learn new skills, immerse themselves in a new culture, and foster international friendships.
They took part in various activities, including visiting Istanbul schools and iconic landmarks.
The children visited a local primary school where they were greeted with traditional Turkish music and dance and an English lesson.
They also enjoyed a homemade Turkish lunch prepared by local families.
The same day, the group met students at a middle school for an art lesson and explored the bustling Kadıköy Bazaar before a restaurant dinner.
Day three treated the group to a ferry ride to the scenic Princes’ Islands.
The pupils toured the island, visited a museum, and had a waterside lunch before an evening with the Adalar Children’s Orchestra for music and games.
On day four, the group took another ferry to explore some of Istanbul’s well-known sites, including the Blue Mosque.
Following a relaxing time at the park, pizza and ice cream wrapped up the day ahead of an early bedtime.
The short yet insightful trip concluded with the group heading to the airport and flying back to London, returning to Barry having accumulated a treasure trove of experiences.
“The visit was a fantastic opportunity for everyone involved, helping children and staff build confidence, learn about Turkish culture and create lasting memories.”
