Lifeguards have reported people becoming unwell because of the hot weather and people on inflatables being blown out to sea by strong crosswinds and offshore winds on busy beach days at Whitmore.
Staff have warned that pool inflatables pose a particular danger, with multiple incidents of people being blown out to sea in recent weeks.
Matt, a lifeguard supervisor, said: “Lilos, inflatable unicorns, flamingos and other pool toys are designed for swimming pools – they don’t belong in the sea.
“Even on calm-looking days, you can be blown offshore in seconds.”
With summer in full swing and beaches growing busier, lifeguards are urging visitors to follow basic safety advice.
This includes staying hydrated, using sunscreen and avoiding the use of inflatables on open water.
Matt said: “If you do find yourself in difficulty in the water, remember: Float to Live.
“Turn on your back, put your ears in the water.
“Stay calm, relax and try to control your breathing.
“Make like a star fish and use your hands to help you stay afloat.
“Don’t worry if your legs sink as we all float differently.
“Raise you hand and call for help.”
He also encouraged beachgoers to take regular breaks in the shade.
Lifeguards remind the public that a day at the coast can be both fun and safe with a few simple precautions.
Anyone who spots someone in danger at the coast should call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
