Major Owen James gave the presentation titled Sandhurst Ramblings at the monthly meeting of the Penarth Probus Club.
Major James used photographs, video footage, and personal anecdotes to share his year at The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, which took place in 2004.
These insights included tales of hardships, like sleeping on the floor having ironed his bed with hospital corners as a SNAP inspection was due early morning.
The presentation covered various challenges of officer training, such as drills on the squares, route marches, and field exercises, as well as leadership development and eventual commissioning as an Army Officer.
Major James also spoke about digging trenches in the dark of night.
He provided a comparison of his experiences at Sandhurst with the contemporary training approach.
Despite significant advancements over the years, the training still retains its focus on cultivating leadership, resilience, character, and service.
His presentation was very warmly received and generated considerable interest, questions and discussion amongst Probus members, several of whom are ex military.
RMAS, commonly known as Sandhurst, is one of the UK’s several military academies and is the British Army’s officer training centre.
The name of this renowned institution is also linked to various well-known personalities.
Prince William was admitted to Sandhurst in January 2006, where he completed a 44-week course as an Officer Cadet, which led to his commission as a British Army Officer.
The club’s next gathering is scheduled for August 18, when Jeff Norman will give a presentation entitled “Modern Slavery”.
