A man has been fined heavily after he was caught driving at a shocking speed of 106mph on a rural road close to a Welsh village, a court heard.
Sam De’Ath, from Cilgerran near Cardigan, was driving his Mercedes AMG on the A477 in Pembrokeshire when he was clocked by traffic officers driving at 46mph above the speed limit of 60mph. De’Ath, 39, was speeding at 9.20am on a section of road between Fishguard and the village of Dinas Cross.
The incident occurred on June 1 last year and De’Ath pleaded guilty to an offence of speeding at a hearing in Aberystwyth Magistrates’ Court on February 10 before he returned to the same court to be sentenced last week. Stay in the know by making sure you’re receiving our daily newsletter
According to the court record, the defendant “drove a Mercedes AMG on the A487 between Dinas and Fishguard Bay Caravan & Camping Park, Pembrokeshire, a single carriageway road, at a speed exceeding the legal limit of 60 miles per hour – the speed recorded by means of laser was 106mph”.
De’Ath was ordered to pay a fine of £700 and handed six penalty points on his licence. He must also pay costs of £120 and a surcharge of £280, meaning a total outlay of £1,100. He was not handed a driving ban.
