Mid-Year Population Estimates 2024 – Vale Evidence Base Update

The Mid-Year Population Estimates for 2024 have now been released and we have updated the Vale Evidence Base with the latest data. I have pulled out the key highlights below along with a link to the PBI report, a link to the full evidence base is also provided which contains the Census 2021 data. MSOA and LSOA level data has not currently been released and we will provide an update on this once it is available.

Vale of Glamorgan Evidence Base – Demographic Change

 Key Highlights:

Vale of Glamorgan population change since last year:

  • In mid-2024, the population of the Vale of Glamorgan was estimated to be 135,743. Between mid-2023 and mid-2024, the total population of the Vale of Glamorgan is estimated to have grown by 0.72%, 972 people. This growth was made-up of positive net migration (inward minus outward) in both internal migration, from within the UK (823) and international migration (537). Between mid-2023 and mid-2024 , Natural Change, the balance between births and deaths, was estimated to be -221.
  • Between mid-2023 and mid-2024, it is estimated that the population aged 0-15 fell by 1.9%, 228 people; the population aged 16-64 grew by 1.2%, 487 people; and the population aged 65 and over grew by 4.9% 751 people.

Vale of Glamorgan population change over a five year period:

  • Between mid-2019 and mid-2024, the total population of the Vale of Glamorgan is estimated to have grown by 4.5%, 5,941 people. This growth was made-up of substantial positive net internal migration of 7,257 people, and smaller positive international migration of 1,391 people. In this five-year period Natural Change was estimated to be -1,130.
  • Between mid-2019 and mid-2024, it is estimated that the population aged 0-15 grew by 1.4%, 343 people; the population aged 16-64 grew by 3.7%, 2,883 people; and the population aged 65 and over grew by 9.6%, 2,715 people.

Vale of Glamorgan population change since mid-2011:

  • Between mid-2011 and mid-2024, the total population of the Vale of Glamorgan is estimated to have grown by 7.1%, 9,064 people. This growth was made-up of substantial positive net internal migration of 12,139 people. Negative net international migration of -361 people and Natural Change of -595.
  • Between mid-2011 and mid-2022, it is estimated that the population aged 0-15 grew by 3.4%, 815 people; the population aged 16-64 increased by 0.7%, 621 people; and the population aged 65 and over grew by 32.8%, 7,628 people.
