A traffic order has been made due to maintenance work being carried out along sections of the A40 in Carmarthenshire

Motorists face potentially long-running disruption on a key route in west Wales which will include an overtaking ban and speed restrictions of as low as 10mph.
A temporary speed restrictions and no overtaking order has been made affecting stretches of the A40 trunk road in Carmarthenshire. The order comes into force on Friday, June 12, and could be in place for a maximum of 18 months.
The Welsh Government has confirmed the restrictions are essential due to “routine maintenance works” being undertaken along the carriageway in different locations around Carmarthen and heading west towards St Clears.
The work being carried out means disruption at different times along the A40 between Glangwili roundabout and Pensarn roundabout, and heading towards Pont Lesneven roundabout next to the former B&Q store.

Restrictions will include temporary 50mph, 40mph or 10mph speed limits, and motorists will be prohibited from overtaking. The Welsh Government has stated that any 10mph speed limits are “only expected to apply during convoy working”.
The full order reads: “The Welsh ministers have made an order under section 14 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, which is necessary to undertake works on or near the A40 trunk road between Carmarthen and St Clears.
“The effect of the order is to impose a temporary 50mph, 40mph or 10mph speed limit and prohibit overtaking on the lengths of the A40 trunk road described in the schedule to this notice. The 10mph speed limit is only expected to apply during convoy working.
“The order comes into force on June 12, 2026. The temporary restrictions and prohibition are expected to operate from 12.01am on that date for a maximum duration of 18 months to undertake routine maintenance works.”
The order sets out the affected locations as follows:
- The length of the south-westbound carriageway of the trunk road that extends from its junction with Glangwili roundabout to a point 150 metres north-east of Pensarn roundabout, Carmarthen.
- The length of the north-eastbound carriageway of the trunk road that extends from a point 80 metres north-east of Pensarn roundabout to its junction with Glangwili roundabout, Carmarthen.
- The length of the trunk road that extends from Pensarn roundabout to Pont Lesneven roundabout, Carmarthen, including the circulatory carriageways of both roundabouts.
- The length of the westbound carriageway of the trunk road that extends from its junction with Pont Lesneven roundabout to a point 116 metres east of St Clears roundabout.
- The length of the eastbound carriageway of the trunk road that extends from a point 116 metres east of St Clears roundabout to a point 30 metres west of its junction with Pont Lesneven roundabout.
