A mechanic with a passion for motorcycles died after crashing into the back of his friend’s bike on a day out together.
An inquest opened into the death Robert Gareth Howe at Swansea’s Guildhall on Tuesday heard how the 40-year-old, described as a “keen motorcyclist”, had gone out with friends riding on their motorbikes on Saturday, August 22.
In the morning, Mr Howe, of Eagle View in Brackla, Bridgend, rode his bike to the Brecon area and then towards Aberavon Beach in Port Talbot.
Mr Howe, who worked as a mechanic, was riding his BMW S 1000 along Harbour Way in Port Talbot when he collided with the rear of his friend’s Honda motorcycle. Stay informed on everything Neath Port Talbot by signing up to our newsletter here.
The collision resulted in both riders being dismounted from their bikes.
Mr Howe was pronounced dead at the scene by a paramedic who attended, whilst his friend was treated for minor injuries.
The inquest heard the reasons for the collision were “unknown” and subject to a police investigation, with an appeal ongoing for witness accounts.
A post mortem report carried out four days after the fatal collision gave a provisional cause of death as “multiple injuries”.
Senior coroner Aled Gruffydd extended his condolences to Mr Howe’s family and adjourned the inquest until February 10 next year, when a final hearing will take place.
