Motorist drives wrong way on one of Wales’ busiest roads

by Martyn Jones

The car failed to stop for police and then re-joined the road heading east on the westbound carriageway

Police are searching for a driver who ignored calls to stop and then joined a busy dual carriageway and proceeded to drive in the wrong direction straight at oncoming traffic.

The incident happened at around 9.45pm on Sunday evening on the A48 between Carmarthen and Cross Hands. The road is one of the busiest in west Wales and has become synonymous with being a crash hotspot in recent years, with statistics showing that on average there is a crash on the road every other day between Carmarthen and the roundabout at Pont Abraham, which is around four and a half miles east of Cross Hands.

On Sunday evening a vehicle heading west towards Carmarthen failed to stop for officers from Dyfed-Powys Police and left the A48 near the village of Porthyrhyd. Stay informed on Carms news by signing up to our newsletter here.

The car then re-joined the dual carriageway but on the wrong side of the road – heading east towards Cross Hands but on the westbound side, towards oncoming traffic.

Due to the risk posed to other motorists police closed off the westbound side of the A48 from Pont Abraham.

Despite the police’s efforts the car was not located on the A48 or nearby, and attempts are now being made to locate the vehicle and the driver.

A spokesman for Dyfed-Powys Police said: “At approximately 9.45pm on Sunday, April 12, a vehicle failed to stop for officers while travelling on the A48 between Cross Hands and Carmarthen.

“The vehicle was then sighted exiting the A48 at the junction for Porthyrhyd, before then re-entering the A48 in the opposite carriageway and driving in the direction of Cross Hands.

“The A48 was closed westbound from Pont Abraham in an effort to mitigate risk, however the offending vehicle was not relocated.

“There were no collisions reported and no arrests have been made. Enquiries are ongoing in order to locate the vehicle.”
