The council says it recognised it was a ‘significant change’
A Welsh council is introducing on-street parking charges on parts of Aberystwyth seafront. The change, being introduced will apply on Victoria Terrace, Marine Terrace and New Promenade.
The seafront is one of the most in-demand parking locations in the county. Ceredigion County Council says charges will be operating daily between 8am and 8pm, to be implemented from Monday, May 18.
The council says that Introducing charges is intended to help manage demand, improve turnover of short-stay spaces and make it easier for residents, visitors and local businesses to find parking for trips into town. Stay in the know by making sure you’re receiving our daily newsletter.
It says it will also encourage use of nearby off-street carparks and support a choice of travel options, including walking, cycling and public transport.
Ceredigion cabinet member for highways and environmental services, councillor Shelley Childs, said: “We recognise this is a significant change, our aim is to manage the very high demand for seafront parking more fairly, improve availability for short visits, and support access to the town centre for residents, businesses and visitors.”
As with other council fees and charges, the authority says parking tariffs form part of how it funds services and manages demand for limited space.
Income from parking, it says, helps meet the “ongoing costs of managing and maintaining parking assets and supporting highways and transport services across the county.”
Drivers will be able to pay at pay-and-display machines or by mobile phone.
Blue Badge holders will to be able to park free of charge in these locations, provided a valid badge is displayed.
Season tickets are also available for the council’s long-stay pay and display car parks.
With a season ticket, daily parking can cost as little as 81p per day.
