Councillors and residents have raised concerns about road safety and parking along Brecon Road opposite Cyfarthfa Park Primary School
There is a plan to deal with parking issues near a Merthyr Tydfil school that are causing road safety issues in the area.
A report that went before cabinet on Thursday, May 14, said councillors in the Park ward and members of the public have highlighted road safety and parking concerns along Brecon Road opposite Cyfarthfa Park Primary School.
The issues include drivers parking at school times causing traffic flow issues, reducing the available carriageway width, and affecting visibility for vehicles travelling in both directions, the report says.
A traffic regulation order prohibiting waiting at any time currently exists along the southern side of Brecon Road opposite Cyfarthfa Park.
The report says additional restrictions are being requested to allow enforcement to be managed more effectively.
To alleviate these parking issues and improve the situation it is being recommended that a prohibition on loading and unloading at any time is introduced in addition to the existing prohibition of waiting at any time restrictions.
This would also prohibit parking by disabled badge holders. Stay informed on everything Merthyr Tydfil by signing up to our newsletter here
A section of Brecon Road outside the park is unrestricted and would remain available for on-street parking and Cyfarthfa Park is also available as an alternative location for drivers to park.
The report says additional “kerb blip” road markings indicating a prohibition of loading/unloading at any time would be needed.
It adds that a prohibition on loading/unloading at any time will “provide a positive impact by reducing congestion, improving road safety for pedestrians, and allowing traffic to flow more freely along this section of road”.
It says the proposal will assist in developing the environment, safer communities, supporting people, provide long-term benefits, and deliver the council’s wellbeing objectives.
Following approval by cabinet the council will now give public notice of its intention to make a traffic regulation order and if no objections are received the proposal will go ahead.
If objections are received a report will go to the appropriate committee as soon as possible to be considered.
