Ofgem has highlighted a cost-effective way to save energy and money
Ofgem has revealed ‘one of the cheapest’ methods to save both energy and save money while maintaining a warm and cosy home this winter and beyond. The independent regulation authority confirmed this week that the energy price cap will decrease from April 1.
From this date until June 30, the cap will be set at £1,641 per annum for an average household using electricity and gas and paying by Direct Debit. This represents a 6.6% reduction compared to the cap established between January 1 and March 31 (£1,758).
While this announcement provides some relief for households struggling with the cost of living crisis, energy prices remain high in comparison to relatively recent years. To assist people across the UK in reducing their expenses, Ofgem has provided a helpful hint.
In a post on X, previously Twitter, Ofgem said: “DIY Draught-proofing is one of the cheapest and most effective ways to save energy and money over the winter. Block unwanted gaps to keep the heat in.”
Additional advice found via an attached link encourages households to: “Block gaps around windows and doors to keep cold air out and stop warm air from escaping”. However, it adds: “Make sure you don’t block ventilation channels, like wall or window vents.”
The Energy Trust also advises households to do this, and says: “By not letting too much cold air in at colder times of the year, you’ll use less energy to heat your home”. However, it cautions that if homes are “already fairly well draught proofed, adding further draught proofing may increase the risk of poor air quality.”
Ofgem also suggests reducing the temperature setting on your combi boiler, if you have one, to cut running costs. Additional recommendations include washing clothes at 30C instead of 40C, and drawing the curtains at night.
Households are also encouraged to fit smart thermostats and heating controls, to obtain a smart meter, and to apply window film to single glazing.
