Adam Price, the Carmarthen West and Dinefwr MS, raised the safety record of the A48 in Carmarthenshire during a plenary session in the Senedd
A dangerous road in Carmarthenshire is “frightening” to drive on according to one politician who raised its safety record in the Senedd this week
- Adam Price, the Carmarthen West and Dinefwr MS, asked Ken Skates, the Welsh Government’s cabinet secretary for transport, about plans to make improvements to the A48 between Carmarthen and Cross Hands.
- The road saw almost 900 crashes in the 10-year period up to the summer of 2018
- In the 12 months between the start of August 2024 and the end of July 2025, there were 186 collisions on the road
- The Welsh Government commissioned a WelTAG (Welsh Transport Appraisal Guidance) study into the safety of the A48 between Pensarn in Carmarthen and Cross Hands (including Cross Hands Roundabout) in March 2020
- Last week huge changes, including the construction of a new roundabout, were announced by the Welsh Government, with some works due to begin later this year
- During a plenary session in the Senedd on Wednesday, March 19, Mr Price spoke to Mr Skates and said: “I find it incredible that it’s been six years since the WelTAG process started. I use these junctions – it is an absolutely frightening experience. When you’re on your own, and when you have kids in the car as well. It’s just completely unacceptable.”
- Mr Price asked Mr Skates when the planned improvements will be made, “given how slow the process has been”.
- In response, Mr Skates said: “It was some time ago that the WelTAG study into the safety of this section of the A48 was commissioned, but I am pleased to say that as a result of the work that has been carried out officials are currently appraising a series of road improvements on the A48 between Cross Hands and Carmarthen. I hope that the next government will deliver them at pace.”
- The 2026 Senedd election takes place in less than 50 days – on May 7
