Robin Vecchi, of Scott Close, St Athan fell into a trap set by Dank Dragon.
The pensioner encouraged what he thought was an underage teenage girl to perform a sexual act on herself.
He was being set up by a decoy, Newport Crown Court was told.
Vecchi pleaded guilty to attempting to cause/incite a girl 13 to 15 to engage in sexual activity, attempting to cause a child aged 13 to 15 to watch/look at an image of sexual activity and attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child.
Judge David Wynn Morgan sentenced him to a 12-month community order.
The defendant will have to complete a 15-day rehabilitation activity requirement and he was made the subject of an electronically monitored curfew between 10pm and 7am for six months.
He will have to register as a sex offender for 10 years and was made the subject of a five-year sexual harm prevention order.
A £114 surcharge will have to be paid.
