Edward Smith, 31, of Althorp Drive, Penarth appeared before Cardiff Magistrates’ Court where he pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol.
The court heard that on 12 March, he drove a white Seat vehicle on Broad Street, Barry, after consuming alcohol.
A blood test showed he had 121 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, significantly above the legal limit.
Magistrates sentenced Smith to a 12-month community order.
As part of the order, he must complete 60 hours of unpaid work.
Smith was also disqualified from driving for 18 months.
The ban can be reduced by 18 weeks if he successfully completes an approved drink-driver rehabilitation course by August 7, 2027.
In addition, he was ordered to pay £85 in prosecution costs and a £114 victim surcharge, a total of £199, to be paid in full by September 7.
Matthew de Maid represented the defendant with Francesca Parry appearing for the prosecution.
