Penarth sauna experience says goodbye to the Esplanade

by martyn jones

Last Thursday, the Hot 2 Cold wood-fired barrel sauna hosted its final day on Penarth Esplanade, marking the end of a hugely popular winter run in partnership with Dawnstalkers sea swim club.

To celebrate, the team threw the doors open with free access, and every session was fully booked as locals and cold-water enthusiasts turned up to say goodbye and share memories.

Inside, the little barrel, which can comfortably fit around seven people at a time, buzzed with chatter as regulars swapped stories of dark winter mornings, icy dips and post-sauna glow.

Many spoke about the health benefits they’ve felt from hot-cold therapy: better sleep, reduced stress and the unmatched endorphin rush that comes from plunging into the sea and then thawing out in dry, pine-scented heat.

Dawnstalkers has helped turn Penarth into a year-round sea-swim hotspot, encouraging people to meet on the seafront at first light and “find your shore” through daily cold-water dips.

The sauna has become a natural extension of that culture, offering a place to warm up, chat and connect after braving the Bristol Channel – from free community sunrise sessions to bookable hour-long slots.

For anyone new to cold water, that first step into the sea can be a genuine shock: the sting as the water hits your feet, the instinct to turn back, the way the cold seems to steal your breath.

The trick, as regulars will tell you, is to breathe through it and commit – run in before doubt creeps in, focus on your breathing and wait for your body to catch up and flood you with warmth from the inside out.

Paired with the intense, dry heat of the barrel sauna, it becomes a unique, almost addictive cycle of chill and glow.

What’s next for Hot 2 Cold?

While Penarth will miss the little wooden sauna on the prom, this isn’t goodbye forever.

The Hot 2 Cold team is relocating the barrel to Newport Road for its next chapter, with plans already in motion for the Penarth seafront sauna to return for a full winter 2026/27 season after two sold-out festive pop-ups and glowing reviews.

When it does come back, bookings will again be available online, alongside community sessions run with Dawnstalkers, bringing that familiar mix of sea mist, sunrise and woodsmoke back to the Esplanade.

Until then, for many Penarth residents and visiting “health lovers or not”, that final free day felt like a fitting send-off.
