Nikki Giant, founder of The Spark Movement, has worked with organisations and communities across Wales and the UK.
However, she said her experience revealed a growing problem — many of those most committed to helping others were struggling themselves.
She said: “Many of the people I work with care deeply about making a difference.
“They’re passionate and driven by purpose, but over time I began to notice how many of them were running on empty.”
Ms Giant said the issue had wider implications, suggesting burnout and stress among leaders can affect the organisations and systems they are trying to improve.
Her thinking was further shaped by personal experience when her sister, Claire Watson, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021.
After recovering, Ms Watson left her teaching career and founded Zen Club, a wellbeing initiative supporting children and young people.
Ms Giant said: “Watching Claire’s journey made me realise how many people spend years serving others without ever stopping to ask what they need.”
The sisters have now joined forces to create The Changemaker Retreat, a four-day programme designed for leaders, educators, charity workers and others in purpose-driven roles.
Taking place in Spain in October, the retreat will combine coaching, reflection and wellbeing practices to help participants reconnect with their values and avoid burnout.
Ms Giant said: “We often celebrate people who keep pushing and giving, but we are reaching a point where many are asking if impact has to come at the expense of wellbeing.”
