Victoria Square in Penarth will feature on BBC Wales after being visited by presenter Molly Palmer on Friday (June 5).
The park was filmed for a show celebrating the ‘making a difference in the community’.
The coming episode is set to hone in on the volunteers of the Friends of Victoria Square group, and the impact the group is having on the community.
Haydn Mayo and Peter Blackburn spoke to them about the formation of the group in late 2018.
This was shortly followed by grants from Heritage Lottery which gave them the financial backing needed to embark on tree and ecology surveys – a critical first step that laid the groundwork for their comprehensive management plan.
This plan is now spearheaded by a vibrant squad of community volunteers ranging in age from 13 to 80.
The remarkable changes seen in Victoria Square wouldn’t have been possible without this ‘great group of friends’.
Twice a year, the group of volunteers take time to organise plant and cake sales, also a book sale, a raffle, and refreshments.
The proceeds from these sales form the financial lifeline for the group, helping maintain the picturesque space.
As a part of Volunteers Week, the BBC team chatted to a number of volunteers about their volunteering journeys and in particular what they personally enjoy about tending to the Square.
From enhancing ecology and biodiversity to reaping mental health benefits and simply feeling good about contributing to a cause greater than themselves, the volunteers had quite a lot to say.
Friends of Victoria Square said: “We thank Molly and all her team for a most enjoyable couple of hours discussing our beautiful Square, and for their very kind comments.
“BBC Wales you are welcome to visit us at any time.”
