Emergency services were called to the runway on Saturday afternoon

Two people were on board a light aircraft when the plane reportedly “flipped” on the runway. The pair emerged relatively unscathed from the incident at Hawarden Airport, Flintshire.

Emergency services rushed to the airport on Saturday afternoon (July 18). It came after reports of an incident on the airport’s 2,093-metre runway.

Rescue crews were called to the scene at approximately 3.10pm after an immediate emergency response was triggered. For the biggest stories in Wales first sign up to our daily newsletter here

A light aircraft had seemingly come to rest nose-down on the tarmac at a 45-degree angle to the runway direction.

Images from the scene show three fire engines positioned on the asphalt runway. A low loader crane was working to hoist the aircraft onto its carrying deck, reports North Wales Live.

Photographer Martyn John Wulfran from Chester documented footage of the aircraft’s recovery and posted it on X.

At the time he wrote: “Emergency services and airport officials have been dealing with a plane that has apparently flipped over on the runway at Hawarden Airport. The aircraft is currently being recovered at the scene of today’s incident at Hawarden Airport.”

The Welsh Ambulance Service confirmed it was dispatched to the location but wasn’t required. A spokesperson stated: “We did attend, but neither patient required hospital treatment.”

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said teams from Deeside, Buckley and Wrexham responded to the incident at 3.10pm on Saturday.

Hawarden Airport said flight operations were suspended for around seven hours.

A spokesperson stated: “We can confirm there was a light aircraft incident at Hawarden Airport on Saturday, July 18. The airport resumed operations at 10pm on Saturday.

“All other queries will need to be directed to the authorities.”

Hawarden Airport accommodates business jets, private aircraft and logistics planes, including the well-known Airbus Beluga transporters. These wide-bodied aircraft transport wings manufactured at the neighbouring Airbus Broughton facility to various sites throughout Europe.
