One of the vehicles believed to have struck the pedestrian on the A40 was a ‘marked police vehicle’

Police have issued an update after a pedestrian died following a serious incident on the A40 bypass in Carmarthen. An investigation was launched underway following a collision which involved six vehicles, including a police vehicle, and a pedestrian on the A40 between what’s known as PC World roundabout and Abergwili roundabout on Tuesday evening.
Dyfed-Powys Police said it initially received a call reporting concern for the safety of a pedestrian who was seen to be on the carriageway. Officers were sent to the scene but prior to their arrival, further calls were received reporting that several vehicles had collided with the pedestrian, a police spokesperson said.
One of the vehicles which struck the pedestrian is believed to have been a “marked police vehicle” which was on routine patrol in the area. Dyfed-Powys Police said it has referred itself to the police watchdog following the incident.
The force has since confirmed the pedestrian who died was a 44-year-old man. His name has not been released at this stage.
The road was shut for almost 24 hours while emergency services responded to the incident.
“We understand the closure caused significant disruption and thank people for their understanding,” a police spokesperson said. “The closure was necessary for the meticulous examination of the scene and of the numerous vehicles involved, with several specialist police resources deployed.”
The force has appealed for anyone who witnessed the crash, which was reported shortly before 10pm, or was travelling along the A40 at the time and might have relevant dashcam footage, to get in touch.

A police statement previously said: “Dyfed-Powys Police is investigating a six-vehicle road traffic collision, which occurred on the A40 between the PC World roundabout and Abergwili roundabout at approximately 9.50pm on Tuesday (28/7).
“The force initially received a report regarding the concern for the safety of a pedestrian who was seen to be on the carriageway. Following officers being deployed, further reports then indicated that several vehicles had collided with the pedestrian prior to officers’ arrival.
“A marked police vehicle, whilst on routine patrol on the A40 at the time, was also reported to have collided with the pedestrian before the police response arrived. “Tragically the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries to identify them and their next of kin are now underway.
“Both carriageways of the road are likely to remain closed for a lengthy period of time today while officers remain at the scene. We would therefore ask motorists to please avoid the area and find alternative routes.
“No arrests have been made in connection with this incident.
“A mandatory referral to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) has been made, which is a statutory requirement in relation to such incidents to ensure independent oversight. It would be inappropriate for us to comment further until the IOPC has completed their assessment.
“Investigating officers would like to speak to anyone with information regarding this incident, as well as motorists who were travelling along the A40 at the time, in particular anyone with dash cam in their vehicles. “
