Popular car boot sale which caused ‘gridlock’ in Welsh village set for return

by Martyn Jones

People described the situation as ‘utterly ridiculous’ last year, but organisers say there was only congestion on one occasion

A car boot sale which last year proved so popular it caused a Welsh village to become “gridlocked” with drivers facing two-hour delays has announced it is back for another year. There were huge traffic jams in Sully, Vale of Glamorgan, last May as people rushed to the first Sully Sports Club car boot sale of the year.

Drone images showed long tailbacks with cars abandoning their plans and turning around. Buses, motorists and residents were stuck in the gridlock as hundreds of people descended on the popular car boot sale.

Speaking to WalesOnline last year after people described the situation as “utterly ridiculous”, the sports club which organised the sale apologised and said the abuse volunteers had received was “beyond”.

They added that the congestion was a small price to pay for keeping the pitches and green space for community use and for sport for children and adults. Always keep on top of the latest Welsh news with our newsletter

Now Sully Sports Club has confirmed its highly popular car boot sale will be back for another year, starting on Sunday, April 26.

Posting on Facebook, organisers said: “Get ready for some incredible finds and fantastic bargains! We’re thrilled to announce that our highly anticipated boot sale is just around the corner.

“After a series of productive team meetings, all preparations are complete, and we’re all set to bring you an amazing event. Mark your calendars!

“Stay tuned for more details on location, times, and what you can expect. You won’t want to miss out on this opportunity to discover hidden gems and support our sports ground.”

Responding to concerns raised about possible traffic jams caused by the car boot sale, Sully Sports Club said that the congestion happened on the first boot sale when a new system was introduced last year, adding “there wasn’t one ounce of traffic on any following boot sales”.
