Station Approach in Penarth, described by residents as the “worst road in Penarth,” has been plagued by deep potholes and crumbling tarmac, prompting residents to call for a full overhaul.
Some drivers have reported damage to tyres and suspensions, while parents have raised concerns about crossing the road with children as cars swerve to avoid the potholes.
A spokesperson for the Vale of Glamorgan Council confirmed the resurfacing was under way.
The council spokesperson said: “The whole of Station Approach, including the car park, is being resurfaced this week.
“Minor works to reinstate the kerb island have also already been completed ahead of the resurfacing this week.”
Locals have taken to social media in recent weeks to voice their frustration, calling repairs too slow and short-lived.
Temporary fixes are said to fail quickly in poor weather and heavy traffic, leaving the road “like it has been repeatedly dug up and badly stitched back together.”
Some residents say the surface is so poor, off-road tracks would be in better condition.
Many have stated that they avoid using the car park on Station Approach because it is “an absolute disaster,” with others warning that wheels and alloys are often destroyed on roads left in this state.
Concerns have also been raised about other roads in the area, including Beach Road.
Residents argue they pay enough in council and road tax to expect safe, well-maintained streets, and have warned it is “only a matter of time” before there is a serious accident involving a cyclist or pedestrian.
Though some acknowledge patching work has been carried out, they say a complete overhaul was needed.
Others have pointed out that Station Approach has been “ignored for years” despite being a key link for commuters, shoppers, and rail users.
They believe a full resurfacing project is needed to restore safety and confidence, and that permanent repairs will save money in the long run.
While residents continue to encourage reporting individual potholes, they insist that only a complete overhaul will do.
