Reported incident outside Fairfield Primary School, Penarth

The incident is said to have happened on Dryden Road, outside Fairfield Primary School, where concerns about traffic during school drop-off and pick-up times have been raised for several years.

Residents and parents say a child was struck by a van on the road last week. The pupil was reportedly not seriously injured.

The concerns come as Vale of Glamorgan Council introduces a new Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) designed to reduce traffic outside the school during key times of the day.

A public notice posted in the area states the order would prohibit motor vehicles from entering part of Dryden Road during school term time between 8am and 9.15am, and 3pm and 4pm, Monday to Friday.

The restrictions form part of a proposed “School Street” scheme aimed at reducing congestion and improving safety around the school gates.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Vale of Glamorgan Council said:

“The Council has introduced a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) on Dryden Road outside Fairfield Primary School as part of measures designed to improve road safety and better manage traffic in the immediate area around the school.

“The order supports the operation of a ‘School Street’, which restricts non-essential vehicle access at key times during the school day. These types of schemes are intended to reduce congestion, limit vehicle movements outside school gates and create a safer environment for pupils, parents and staff travelling to and from school. They also encourage more active forms of travel such as walking and cycling.

“The safety and wellbeing of pupils is always our priority, and while we cannot comment on individual incidents, we are aware of a recent matter involving a pupil. Measures such as the TRO are designed to help reduce risks around the school gate and support a safer environment for everyone using the area.”

Parents have previously been asked by the school not to drop children directly outside the gates, but residents say some drivers continue to ignore the requests.

The issue has also caused tensions locally.

The council notice states residents and members of the public can submit comments or objections to the proposal before a deadline in March.

If approved, the scheme would formally restrict vehicles from entering the affected section of Dryden Road during the busy school run periods.

Fairfield Primary School was approached for a comment.
