The reintroduction of the Street Scene service came at the start of this year after several years without a dedicated cleaning team operating specifically in Penarth.
Under the new initiative, the Vale of Glamorgan Council has agreed to use funding from a UK producers levy to support the service.
The scheme includes:
• Five new all-electric street cleaning wagons
• A dedicated weeding service
• Cleaning of road signs and street furniture
• A dedicated team working specifically in Penarth and the surrounding area
Residents in Penarth will have noticed the work of the team first hand in recent weeks, with lighting and benches on the Esplanade and seafront looking fresh, thanks to the work of this team.
These pieces of infrastructure were painted last year but the reformation of the Street Scene team means that they are regularly cleaned, providing a fresh look for the seafront.
As part of these changes, Penarth has seen the return of dedicated town centre street sweepers, alongside five new place-based teams covering towns and large villages across the Vale.
Each team is equipped with specialist vehicles and equipment to respond more quickly to litter, graffiti and spillages, as well as increased cleaning of road signs, street furniture and key transport routes.
Local councillors Anthony Ernest and Rhys Thomas have been particularly supportive of the initiative, asking residents to “let the Street Scene team know that they are doing a great job, when you pass them next around Penarth, with brushes in hand, as they smarten up your town.”
A spokesperson for the Vale of Glamorgan Council said: “Our Street Scene teams work hard year-round to keep Penarth looking its best, and their ongoing work and attention to detail make a real difference to the town centre and wider area.
“Our teams continue to carry out regular maintenance and upkeep across Penarth, helping to keep the town’s streets and public spaces looking clean, tidy and welcoming.”
Alongside this Street Scene cleaning, the fairy lights on the Esplanade are also back in action, following an issue with the power supply.
The Council spokesperson said: “We’re also pleased that the festoon lighting on the Esplanade has now been replaced following an issue with the power supply, helping to restore the ambience of the seafront in the evenings.
“Our Street Scene teams take great pride in keeping our public spaces clean, welcoming and well maintained, and we’re always pleased when their work is noticed and appreciated by residents and visitors.”
