Benjamin Thomas, 45, of Matthew Road, Fontygary, Rhoose successfully used the “exceptional hardship” argument to keep his licence.
A totting-up ban can happen for having 12 or more penalty points within a three‑year period.
Cardiff Magistrates’ Court heard how a driving disqualification would “result in the loss of his business and effect his employees with the loss of jobs”.
Thomas pleaded guilty to speeding at 36mph in a 30mph zone whilst driving a Ford Transit van on one of the city’s busiest roads.
The offence took place on the A48 Western Avenue, near its junction with Excelsior Road, on Sunday, August 10 last year.
He was ordered to pay £206 in a fine, costs and a surcharge.
Three penalty points were added to his licence.
