Roland Orzabal’s memoir offers insight into Tears For Fears’ story

by David Jones

A deeply personal and moving memoir, Welcome To Your Life sets out its stall by charting Roland Orzabal’s early childhood, when his personal discovery of music blossomed into creative expression. From here, and with the Orzabal family moving from Hampshire to Somerset, he would go on to co-found Tears For Fears, a pop group who enjoyed wild success in the 1980s and remain an arena-sized concern today.

The book is an open insight into how Orzabal’s early childhood experiences affected his confidence but, equally, how obstacles were overcame in pursuit of his musical dreams. His relationship with Curt Smith, TFF’s other founding member, has been difficult at times, and is treated candidly here; much the same applies to his coping mechanisms in the face of the band’s mid-80s rise to fame, and the mental struggles which followed the death of wife Caroline Johnston in 2017.

We hear, too, about Orzabal’s alienating relationship with his father and how this affected him growing up: this circles back to an approach to lyrics which draws on childhood experiences and life reflections. Tears For Fears’ 1983 debut LP The Hurting and 1985’s Songs From The Big Chair both yielded multiple hit singles; The Seeds Of Love, released in 1989, ushered in a different style, with the duo looking to adapt to the times. Smith’s departure after this left TFF as an effective Orzabal solo vehicle, though they have since reconvened as a duo.

In a later chapter, Orzabal reflects, “It seems that Tears for Fears cannot produce their best work without a lot of suffering.” Perhaps that’s what resonates with the audience: the permission to feel, and thus normalise one’s experience. Welcome To Your Life is an insight into a remarkable career, one marked by commercial and artistic success alike.
