Shoplifting increase in Penarth highlighted at meeting

by David Jones

At the gathering on June 18, both in-person and online, PC Tunnicliffe noted an increase in shoplifting incidents.

While this rise is concerning, he attributed it partly to “more active reports being provided” due to the South Wales Police’s ongoing collaboration with local businesses.

Councillors L Rochefort, R Birch, I Buckley, M Cuddy, E Penn, M Rabaiotti, E Richards, R Cox, N Thomas, Z Weaver, and M Wilson were present at the meeting, along with Penarth Youth Action, a representative from the Vale of Glamorgan Council, and PC Tunnicliffe from South Wales Police.

Apologies for absence were received from Cllr R Cook and R Cox.

PC Tunnicliffe also conveyed the positive news of a reduction in crime rates, excluding the shoplifting rise.

Beyond shoplifting, councillors and attendees were informed about a warden in Barry and Penarth appointed by the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

This initiative, combined with increased police activity, was praised for enhancing police visibility in Penarth.

The council recognised the accomplishments of Ysgol Pen y Garth’s Year 6 and under choir, which claimed first place at the Urdd Eisteddfod 2026.

This success was lauded as a tremendous success.

Attention has also turned to litter problems and summer events.

Penarth Youth Action confirmed they would be participating in the forthcoming Summer Festival in July 2026.

The council received an update on Penarth’s bus service provision.

Furthermore, updates ranging from heart screenings, the One Voice Wales Civility and Respect Pledge, and preparation for the Penarth Summer Festival were shared, giving insight into the character of community engagement within the council.

PC Tunnicliffe also outlined speed control checks in the area and an impending community CPR training event, rounding up the broad scope of Penarth Town Council’s interest in community welfare, and law enforcement.
