Yesterday (March 3), Cardiff and the Vale Health Board announced they had discovered “markers” believed to be linked to targeted crime in hospital car parks — but rather than spray-painted symbols or smashed windows, the unusual signs were roses.

The Health Board said: “We’re aware that several vehicles at UHW and UHL have had roses or small ‘markers’ placed on them, which nationally have sometimes been linked to attempts to identify vehicles for criminal activity.

“As a precaution, South Wales Police has been informed, and security patrols have been increased. There is no immediate cause for concern, but please remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to Security.”

The Health Board later confirmed that patrols are being carried out by South Wales Police to ensure safety and minimise crime.

spokesperson from Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said:  “We are aware of markers being placed on cars at hospital sites across Cardiff and Vale.

“As a precaution, the Security Team has informed the police and will be increasing patrols across both hospital sites to every 30 minutes.

“We ask that people remain vigilant for any markers on their cars and to inform security in the first instance should you have any concerns.”

South Wales Police were contacted for further information.

They said: “We are aware of reports regarding roses being placed on vehicles parked on the two hospital sites.

“There could be an innocent explanation for the flowers, and there is no immediate cause of concern.

“As always, our police liaison team at the health board are working closely with hospital security and ask car park uses to remain vigilant and report any suspicious.”

Investigations into the matter continue.
