The Bottle Shop, Penarth, celebrates 12 years

by David Jones

The independent wine, beer and spirits specialist opened its Penarth branch in 2014 as an offshoot of Cardiff’s original Bottle Shop, expanding owner Daniel Williams’ growing drinks business into the Vale.

Williams, a former wine trade rep who launched his own wholesale company Bespoke Wines back in 2008, wanted to create a neighbourhood shop where people could discover new bottles without feeling intimidated. The Penarth site was designed as a bigger second unit, combining retail with storage and office space for the wider group.

Twelve years on, regulars know it as much more than just a place to grab a bottle on the way home.

The shelves are packed with hundreds of wines from small producers, craft beers from across Wales and beyond, and a strong range of interesting spirits.

Online reviews consistently praise the knowledgeable, friendly staff and the way they’ll steer you towards something new at your price point rather than just the most expensive option.

In recent years the shop has leaned into being a social space too. Weekend drink‑in sessions see tables set up between the racks, giving customers the chance to share a bottle on site in a relaxed, bustling atmosphere.

A partnership with neighbouring business Pizza Pronto means you can pair your wine or beer with a freshly made pizza, making it an easy, informal night out without leaving CF64.

The Bottle Shop also hosts regular tastings and events, from informal drop‑ins to ticketed sessions such as its “Bottle Up!” festival, drawing producers and drinkers together under one roof.

For many Penarth residents it has become the go‑to place for Christmas fizz, birthday presents and last‑minute barbecue beers, as well as a handy spot to discover low‑intervention wines or the latest IPA.

In a town where chains increasingly dominate the high street, surviving – and thriving – for 12 years as an independent is no small achievement.

The Bottle Shop’s mix of expert knowledge, laid‑back vibe and strong ties to local suppliers has helped it become part of Penarth’s social fabric – and, judging by the busy weekend crowds, it shows no sign of slowing down.
