The Cardiff yellow box junctions where drivers are most likely to be fined

Fines of almost £1m were issued by Cardiff Council in the last financial year to drivers who contravened yellow box junction rules

Thousands of people have been fined for contravening rules some of the most notorious yellow box junctions in Cardiff so far this year. The junctions are in place to aid the flow of traffic through busy areas, and many drivers are familiar with the dread of getting stuck on one.

In 2025/26, Cardiff Council made almost £1m from issuing Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) fines to drivers who fell foul of the rules.

Drivers are allowed to enter a yellow box junction when their exit is clear and there is enough space on the other side of the junction for their vehicle to clear the box completely without stopping.

You can stop in a yellow box junction when turning right if you are prevented from turning by oncoming traffic, or by other vehicles waiting to turn right.

According to the Cardiff Council website, those handed a yellow box PCN will be fined £70. However, the fine will be slashed in half to £35 if paid within 14 days. If the PCN is ignored then the penalty will increase further.

A Freedom of Information Request submitted by WalesOnline has now revealed the top five junctions where most city drivers have been fined so far in 2026/27. Find out where you are most likely to be caught out below.

1. Churchill Way Junction/With Bute Terrace

Topping the list of junctions catching drivers out in the capital is the junction between Churchill Way and Bute Terrace. The large yellow box, adjacent to the Utilita Arena, is a hotspot for shoppers heading towards the John Lewis and St David’s car parks, and has caught out over 1,590 drivers since April 1.

Drivers queuing for the multi-storey car parks can often get caught out in the box.

2. Dumfries Place Junction/With Newport Road/Station Terrace

Another problematic junction for drivers has proved to be the three-way junction between Dumfries Place, Newport Road, and Station Terrace.

The busy junction near the end of Queen Street is notoriously busy around rush hour, with traffic queueing to get out of the city centre.

So far this financial year, 1,347 drivers have been fined there, bringing in a hefty £40,425.

3. Adam Street Junction/With Central Link

Coming in at number three was the junction between Adam Street and Central Link which runs alongside the prison.

The box, used by drivers heading towards key city centre car parks, as well as towards Cardiff Bay, Newport Road, and Cathays, catches thousands of drivers out every year.

So far this financial year, 977 drivers have been caught out at the junction. Fining drivers there has made Cardiff Council £28,770 since April.

4. Leckwith Road Junction/With Wellington Street and Kitchener Road (Southwest bound)

A total of 742 drivers have been fined for wrongly stopping in the yellow box at the Leckwith Road junction with Wellington Street and Kitchener Road heading southwest.

Hundreds of drivers heading in the direction of the Cardiff City Stadium and Leckwith Interchange from Canton and the city centre were caught, bringing in £24,465 for the council.

5. Leckwith Gyratory Junction/Of A4232 Slip Road and Hadfield Road

Located next to the Cardiff City Stadium and Capital Shopping Park, a large yellow box near the Leckwith Interchange is also catching drivers out. The busy junction which sees many football fans and shoppers travel through, has seen 484 drivers fined since April 1.

The council has made a total of £15,645 from the junction since the start of this financial year alone.

Information obtained by WalesOnline also revealed that Cardiff Council brought in almost £1m from issuing yellow box junction fines in the last financial year.

The council made a whopping £920,682.20 in 2025/26, more money than it had made in the previous five years from fining drivers.

As of September 15 this financial year, they have made £221,830.00.
