South Wales Police confirmed that an 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy were taken into custody following the incident, which occurred on Park Road at around 10.30pm.
Both were arrested in the Roath area of Cardiff at about 11pm the same night. A car was seized as part of the investigation, and several items were recovered from the scene by forensic teams for examination.
A police cordon remained in place along Park Road on Tuesday as officers continued to advise residents and drivers to avoid the area and use alternative routes, with access restricted between Porth-Y-Castell and Porthkerry Park.
Residents in the area reported a heavy police presence throughout the day as officers maintained the cordon and forensic activity, as others reported being escorted by police and having to provide their names to officers while entering or leaving their homes.
When we arrived at the scene, a 50-year-old man who lives on Cambridge Street had just checked his CCTV to see if he could assist police officers.
He explained there was nothing to see but it had picked up several loud bangs, at around 10.30pm, which he likened to the sound of gun shots.
There were not many people around except for the occasional dog walker and people turning around when they couldn’t get through, including an Asda delivery driver.
Several of the residents we spoke to weren’t sure about what was going on with one dog walker telling us: “We’re none the wiser and we only live 100 yards away.”
An eyewitness, Hayley, 47, described the events of the previous night.
She said: “I was asleep last night, at around 10.30pm, and I heard two noises that sounded like a gun shot.”
“I said to my partner that sounded like a gun and he said no it couldn’t have been.”
Hayley continued: “A police officer knocked on the door in the early hours to see if they’d heard anything so I invited her in and told her what we know.”
“It is shocking when you hear [what sounds like] a gun shot outside your home and we are hearing more about guns and knives so it makes you very weary of what’s happening”.
Another dog walker, 72, reiterated this feeling of weariness.
She said: “It’s a bit too close to home but there’s been quite a bit of trouble down Porthkelly from what I’ve heard”.
A South Wales Police statement said: “Two males have been arrested following an incident in Park Road, Barry, at around 10.30pm last night (Monday, April 13).
“There were reports that a person had been assaulted. However, no victim has come forward nor been identified.
“Checks have been made with local hospitals and further enquiries are on-going. An 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy have been arrested in connection with the incident and remain in custody.”
“An investigation is continuing to establish the exact circumstances of the incident”.
