Two rare bank notes have sold for big money after a mistake saw the King and Queen missing
A rare pair of bank notes have sold for almost 10 times their original value – as both the King and Queen are not visible on them. The £5 and £10 notes were sold together for £149.42 on eBay on Sunday, April 26.
Both of the notes feature a rare ink error, as the design on the front of the bank note, which should feature King Charles III and Queen Elizabeth II, has not been printed properly.
Only the top of the design and the words ‘Bank of England’ are visible on both of the notes. This means that the portraits of King Charles and Queen Elizabeth are missing from the design.
The ‘almost identical’ notes were sold as a pair, with the error making their value skyrocket. The listing reads: “Please look at pictures and really observe these error notes, everything noticeable on pictures.
“Please look as both error notes and notice their similarities also have misprint on silver, almost identical. Packaged in glass airtight container for display and protection.”
One keen buyer snapped up the notes for the £149.42 buy-it-now price plus £3.42 postage on Sunday, April 26. That means the notes were sold for almost 10 times their original value and will be sure to have Brits checking their change for the same error.
Polymer £10 notes featuring Queen Elizabeth II and Jane Austen were first introduced into circulation by the Bank of England in 2017. Following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, banknotes featuring a portrait of King Charles III were first issued on June 5, 2024.
Banknotes that feature the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II will remain legal tender and are co-circulating alongside King Charles III notes.
