Motorists have been encouraged to refresh their knowledge of the Highway Code after the RAC highlighted commonly confused road signs that could lead to hazardous situations.

Drivers have been urged to revisit their Highway Code knowledge to avoid misreading traffic signs. There’s a lot of information to take in when completing a driving test, and recalling the meaning of every sign can be difficult years down the line.
Signs serve a vital function in navigating Britain’s roads, with each carrying its own meaning. The RAC notes that hundreds are used throughout the UK, and even their shape holds significance.
A circular road sign gives instructions, a triangular sign delivers warnings, whilst a rectangular sign provides information. Nevertheless, one sign is often confused with another, which could result in dangerous situations if misinterpreted, reports the Express.
A red triangle displaying two vertical black lines signals that the road will narrow on both sides. The RAC clarified: “This ‘bottleneck’ sign looks very similar to the ‘dual carriageway ends’ sign, except for one key difference; the vertical lines remain separate despite coming closer together.”
The breakdown cover provider recommended: “Pay special attention to nearby road markings, as the width of lanes will begin to change.”
The sign has a striking resemblance to a red triangle with two vertical black lines converging. However, this sign indicates the end of a dual carriageway.
Explaining the difference, the RAC stated: “The ‘dual carriageway ends’ sign appears in a red triangle. It shows two carriageways coming together to indicate two-way traffic will continue ahead on a single carriageway road.
“You’ll soon notice the central reservation coming to an end and lanes beginning to merge.”
Confusing these two can be dangerous, as one warns motorists that dual carriageways are merging, whilst the other indicates that the two lanes will remain separate but will be closer together.
Another commonly misinterpreted road sign is the simple red circle with nothing inside. This unusual sign, featuring a red border and a completely blank white centre, signifies that no vehicles are allowed to enter.
According to the Highway Code, this sign marks a road that is prohibited to all vehicular traffic, making it illegal for drivers to proceed beyond that point.
Breaking this rule could result in substantial fines and penalty points. Usually, this sign is found in pedestrianised areas, quiet lanes, private roads, and certain bridges or narrow passages.
The restriction applies to all vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, vans and lorries.
